On Monday, April 27, 2026, Mt. Gilboa African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church’s building and sanctuary was impacted by a fire. Pastor Garland D. Owens, Sr. released a formal statement on April 28, “…our hearts are encouraged and filled with gratitude for the outpouring of community support and love. We thank God there were no reported injuries and for the rapid response of our community and first responders.

As a faith community under the sacred denominational banner of African Methodism, we remain steadfast in our faith and prayerful as we navigate this unexpected challenge. The unique history of our church, which has spanned across generations, remains a profound and living testament of God’s faithfulness in times of trials and tribulations. As a community, we trust God and stand united by our faith, love, and service. We stand as a faith community that fervently believes that God is “…able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,…” and what has been impacted physically, does not diminish our spiritual fortitude.

This experience reminds us that our church is more than a building, and we are inspired to remain steadfast in our mission to love God, love people and spread the love and gospel of Jesus Christ…”
